Dr. Joanna BladesChild & Adolescent and Perinatal Psychiatrist
RANZCP perinatal psychiatry support across pre-conception, pregnancy, and the first year after birth, delivered via secure telehealth across Australia by Dr Joanna Blades.
Perinatal psychiatry is a clinical subspecialty for women in pregnancy and the first postpartum year. The demands of this stage, the physiological changes of pregnancy and breastfeeding, and the implications for medication choice all mean general adult psychiatry guidance does not always apply directly.
Lionheart provides specialist perinatal psychiatric assessment and ongoing care via telehealth. Our perinatal lead is Dr Joanna Blades, who works with women from pre-conception through to the end of the first postpartum year, with a warm, collaborative, evidence-based approach.
For an in-depth overview of the conditions we treat in this period — antenatal and postnatal depression, perinatal anxiety and OCD, birth-related PTSD — see our Perinatal Mental Health condition page.
Common Reasons Women Book Perinatal Psychiatry
Some of what we hear in first appointments
Sadness, tearfulness, or exhaustion that has lasted more than 2 weeks and is not improving with rest.
Excessive worry about the baby, intrusive thoughts about safety, or panic symptoms that interfere with daily functioning.
Distressing, often horrifying thoughts of accidental harm. These are a recognised feature of perinatal anxiety and OCD — not predictive of action, and highly treatable.
Feeling emotionally disconnected, going through the motions of caregiving, or struggling to feel the connection you expected. Worth assessing rather than enduring.
Intrusive memories of a difficult birth, avoidance of medical settings, or hypervigilance about future pregnancies.
Reviewing medication, optimising mental health before conception, and planning postpartum support all improve outcomes for women with a history of depression, anxiety, bipolar, or psychotic illness.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Lionheart's perinatal psychiatry service
Dr Joanna Blades is our perinatal lead. She is a Child, Adolescent, and Perinatal Psychiatrist with experience supporting women across pre-conception, pregnancy, and the first postpartum year. Her approach is warm, collaborative, and shaped by the realities of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and early parenthood.
Request a Mental Health Treatment Plan referral from your GP, midwife, or obstetrician, then book through our patient dashboard. We typically have appointments available within 3-6 weeks. Urgent cases are triaged for earlier review where possible.
A GP, midwife, or obstetrician referral is recommended so that you can claim Medicare rebates with a Mental Health Treatment Plan. We accept referrals from any of these clinicians and provide a comprehensive report back to your treating team within 5 business days of the appointment.
Yes. We see women across the entire perinatal period, including pre-conception planning for women with a history of mental illness, antenatal assessment and treatment, and postnatal care through the first year after birth. Earlier engagement generally leads to better outcomes.
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons women seek a perinatal psychiatry appointment. Several SSRIs and other psychiatric medications have well-established safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding. We weigh the genuine risks of untreated illness against the well-characterised risks of specific medications, and you make an informed choice.
We partner with GPs and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments and ongoing collaborative care for your young patients.
