What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. The word "spectrum" reflects the wide range of presentations — abilities and support needs vary substantially from person to person.

Current Australian estimates suggest about 1 in 70 people are autistic. Diagnosis rates have risen as understanding has improved, particularly for girls, women, and people without intellectual disability who were historically missed. Many adults are now seeking assessment after recognising themselves in a child or relative who has been diagnosed.

Autism is not an illness to be cured. The diagnostic process is about understanding how someone’s brain works, identifying genuine support needs, and accessing resources (including NDIS funding when eligible) that improve quality of life. Co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or sensory processing difficulties are common and often respond to focused treatment.

Common Signs of Autism

Common ways Autism can present

Social Communication Differences

Difficulty with the back-and-forth of conversation, reading non-verbal cues, understanding implied meaning, or adjusting communication style across contexts. Eye contact may feel uncomfortable or be used differently than typical.

Restricted Interests & Repetitive Behaviour

Deep, focused interests in specific topics, repetitive movements (stimming), strong preference for routines, and distress when routines are disrupted. Special interests can be a significant strength as well as a clinical sign.

Sensory Processing Differences

Heightened or reduced response to sounds, lights, textures, smells, tastes, or touch. Specific clothing, food textures, or noisy environments can be intolerable. Often a major driver of distress and behavioural challenges.

Masking in Girls & Women

Many autistic girls and women learn to mimic typical social behaviour to fit in, exhausting themselves in the process. Often diagnosed only after burnout, mental health difficulties, or a child being diagnosed first. Internal struggle is significant despite outward appearance.

Co-Occurring Conditions

ADHD, anxiety, OCD, depression, sleep difficulties, eating differences, and learning disorders are common. The diagnostic question is often "autism plus what else?" rather than autism alone.

Adult Recognition

Many adults seek assessment after recognising themselves in a diagnosed child, after burnout in social or sensory-demanding jobs, or after years of feeling different without language for it. Adult diagnosis can be deeply validating and reframe a lifetime of experiences.

How Autism Assessment & Support Works

Comprehensive autism assessment combines clinical interview (developmental history, current functioning), structured observation tools (such as ADOS-2 in clinic settings), parent or partner reports, and where useful, school or workplace input. The aim is a clear formulation: is this autism, what are the genuine support needs, and what else is going on?

Autism itself is not treated with medication. However, common co-occurring conditions are. ADHD medication, SSRIs for anxiety or depression, sleep interventions, and behavioural support all play a role when relevant. We do not pathologise autistic traits; we treat the things that are causing distress or impairment.

Support recommendations depend on age and need. For children, this might include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, parent training, school accommodations, and where eligible, NDIS support. For adolescents and adults, work or study accommodations, sensory-informed lifestyle changes, and treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions are often the highest-yield supports.

How Lionheart Approaches Autism Care

Our role is psychiatric assessment and ongoing mental health care. For straightforward childhood autism diagnostic assessment with ADOS-2 administration, families are sometimes better served by a developmental paediatrician or psychologist trained in ADOS-2 in person. We will refer where that is clearly the better fit, and we work alongside those clinicians for the psychiatric components.

Where Lionheart adds the most value is complex presentations: autism with significant anxiety, depression, OCD, or ADHD; autism missed in adolescence or adulthood; autism in girls and women; and autism where medication management for co-occurring conditions is needed. Telehealth assessment of older children, adolescents, and adults is well-supported by current evidence.

For NDIS purposes, diagnosis from a psychiatrist, paediatrician, or appropriately qualified psychologist is generally accepted. We provide detailed reports written for both clinical and NDIS use, including functional impact and recommended supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Autism

For older children, adolescents, and adults, telehealth psychiatric assessment of autism is well-supported by current evidence and produces reliable diagnostic conclusions in most cases. For young children where ADOS-2 administration is critical, in-person assessment by a developmental paediatrician or specialised psychologist is often preferable. We will guide you to the best assessment pathway based on age and presentation.

Yes. NDIS accepts autism diagnosis from psychiatrists, paediatricians, and appropriately qualified psychologists. We provide reports specifically structured to meet NDIS evidence requirements, including functional impact and recommended supports. Your local NDIS planner will use this report as part of the access decision.

Yes, and this is one of the most common presentations we see in girls. Skilled assessment looks for evidence beyond observable behaviour — exhaustion, sensory experiences, internal social effort, and the difference between school presentation and home decompression. Parent and self-report are critical, not just clinical observation.

Yes. Adult autism assessment is valid, often deeply useful, and increasingly common. A comprehensive psychiatric assessment includes developmental history, current functioning, sensory experiences, and screening for common co-occurring conditions like ADHD and anxiety. Many adults find diagnosis significantly reframes their understanding of themselves and informs how they organise their work, relationships, and self-care.

Diagnosis does not change who a child is — it provides language and understanding. For many families, diagnosis unlocks support that genuinely improves quality of life: school accommodations, allied health, NDIS funding, and informed parenting strategies. Diagnosis is private; you decide who knows. The risk of not diagnosing is missing the support a child genuinely needs.

No. Autism is not treated with medication. We treat co-occurring conditions when they are causing distress: ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, severe sleep difficulties. The aim is never to make someone less autistic — it is to make distressing, impairing co-occurring conditions easier to live with.
